79 People Murdered in Washington, D.C. So Far This Year; 45 of Those Murders Remain Unsolved
(CNSNews.com) – Seventy-nine people have been murdered in Washington, D.C., so far in 2022 and 45 of those murders remain unsolved, according to information released by the Metropolitan Police Department.
The 79 murders committed in the District of Columbia through May 27 of this year exceeds the 73 that were committed through May 27 of 2021—even though the number of murders committed throughout 2021 in D.C. ended up hitting an 18-year high of 226.
The 226 murders committed in the nation’s capital last year was up from 198 in 2020; 166 in 2019; 160 in 2018, and 116 in 2017.
The last time there were more than 226 murders in Washington, D.C., in one year was in 2003, according to the MPD’s annual reports. That year there were 248.
By 2012, the number of murders committed in Washington, D.C. had declined to 88, the lowest level in this century. The 79 murders committed in D.C. through May 27 of this year is nine less than all the murders that were committed in the district in that year a decade ago.
The “clearance” rate for murders in Washington, D.C., has also dropped since then.
“The MPD’s homicide clearance rate is calculated by dividing the total number of homicide cases closed in a calendar year by the total number of homicides that occurred in that year,” explains the MPD’s latest annual report. “The cases closed can be for homicides that occurred in the current year or in the prior years. In other words, some clearances recorded in a particular calendar year may pertain to offenses that occurred in previous years. A case is ‘cleared’ when, for any given crime, at least one person has been arrested, charged and turned over to prosecutors, or in exceptional circumstances, such as when the offender died.”
The clearance rate for homicides in Washington, D.C., was 95.4 percent in 2011. In 2012, it dropped to 81.8 percent; and, in 2013, it dropped to 79.8 percent.
Since then, it dropped to 67 percent in 2021.
