CatholicVote Calls on Biden to Condemn Pro-Abortion Protests in Catholic Churches on Mother's Day

(CNS News) — The non-profit group CatholicVote is calling on President Joe Biden and other public leaders to denounce the call by pro-abortion activists to protest at Catholic churches this Sunday and to rally outside the homes of Supreme Court justices.

The radical pro-abortion group “Ruth Sent Us” announced the protests on Twitter. (The “Ruth” in the name apparently refers to deceased Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who supported abortion.)

“Whether you’re a ‘Catholic for Choice,’ ex-Catholic, of other or no faith, recognize that six extremist Catholics set out to overturn Roe,” the group tweeted. “Stand at or in a local Catholic Church Sun May 8. #WarOnWomen #MothersDayStrike.”

As reported earlier this week, an opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, was leaked to Politico. The news outlet reported that the opinion was a majority, with Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Neil Gorsuch in support. All of those justices are Catholic except for Gorsuch, who is Episcopalian.

In a statement, CatholicVote President Brian Burch said, “In the wake of the shameless leak of a draft opinion of the Supreme Court, pro-abortion groups are now threatening to disrupt Catholic churches and to protest outside the homes of Supreme Court justices this Sunday.”

“President Biden must immediately and forcibly condemn these domestic terrorist threats,” said Burch.  “Anti-Catholic zealots are plotting to intimidate and harass Catholics across the country, along with justices and their families. This country was built on freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The President of the United States must stand up for both.”

“These threats follow a record number of attacks on Catholic churches, shrines, and symbols over the past two years,” said Burch.  “Just this week another Catholic church in Boulder, CO was desecrated by pro-abortion activists.”

“We call on responsible leaders in Washington to unequivocally condemn these dangerous threats before they lead to violence, or worse,” he added.

In addition to calling for the protests “at or in” Catholic churches this Sunday, “Ruth Sent Us” has posted videos of its members demonstrating in Catholic places of worship.

“This is what Mother’s Day should look like,” said the pro-abortion group. “Catholic and Evangelical Churches nationwide.”

Joshua Mercer, communications director of Catholic Vote, said, “In the past, we might have blown off the words of these activists as empty threats. But given the recent rash of very real attacks on Catholic statues and churches, it makes sense to be cautious.”

“And this Sunday, keep your eyes open,” he said. “These are ruthless people, and they’re looking for a confrontation.”
