Conservatives Applaud Defeat of Democrats' 'Abortion on Demand Until Birth' Bill

(CNS News) — In the wake of a leaked Supreme Court opinion arguing for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, congressional Democrats tried but failed to pass an extreme abortion bill that would wipe out state restrictions on the procedure and allow abortions up to the moment of birth.
The legislation’s defeat in the Senate was applauded by conservatives and showed “how extreme and out of touch” Democrats are, said GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
The Women’s Health Protection Act, dubbed the “Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act” by pro-life advocates, passed in the House last September. A vote on cloture, to move the bill forward to a full floor vote in the Democrat-dominant Senate, failed on Wednesday, 51-49.
Every Senate Republican and one Democrat, Joe Manchin (W. Va.), voted against the measure.
Democrats’ latest failed attempt to impose their radical late-term abortion agenda is another reminder of how extreme and out of touch they are.
Voters will hold Biden and Democrats accountable for being radical, cruel, and anti-science come November. (1/2)

“Democrats’ latest failed attempt to impose their radical late-term abortion agenda is another reminder of how extreme and out of touch they are,” tweeted Ronna McDaniel on May 11. Voters will hold Biden and Democrats accountable for being radical, cruel, and anti-science come November.”
“Americans overwhelmingly support commonsense pro-life protections and limits on abortion, but Democrats are doubling down on taxpayer-funded, unlimited abortion on demand up to the moment of birth,” she further tweeted.
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) tweeted, “Today, my Democratic colleagues put forth a bill that goes way beyond putting Roe v. Wade into law. This law overrides all state and federal laws that exist on restrictions to abortions. … This bill also creates a right to an abortion at any point of the pregnancy. … I voted ‘no’ today on this radical legislation, and I am not surprised that this effort failed.”
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweeted, “The Democrats’ extreme pro-abortion bill would require that abortion be legal up until the moment of birth, without exceptions. This is such a radical position that over 80 percent of Americans oppose it, including some Democrats in Congress.”
He added, “I trust Texans to decide abortion laws for ourselves, not radical liberals from New York and California. I’m proud to be pro-life and proud to oppose this extreme bill.”
Today Senate Democrats attacked the right to life. But I’m happy and proud to say that their efforts were defeated. Senate Republicans stopped them. I will always stand for life.

In a tweet with a picture of a baby killed by late-term abortion in Washington, D.C., Live Action’s Lila Rose said, “WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGE: Every single Senate Democrat except Joe Manchin voted to make the brutality done to this baby girl LEGAL in all 50 states. Utterly sickening.”

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, said in a statement, “Pro-abortion Democrats are dramatically out of touch with the American people, who overwhelmingly reject abortion on demand until birth. The deeply unpopular Abortion on Demand Until Birth Act would wipe away nearly all common ground pro-life protections in the states, including limits on painful late-term abortion which the people strongly support. It was doomed to fail, and it did.”
“At just 15 weeks, an unborn child can feel pain, and the United States is one of very few countries — including China and North Korea — that don’t protect vulnerable children and their mothers at this point,” said Dannenfelser. “Radical pro-abortion lawmakers who shamefully advocate a ‘right’ to abortion at any time for any reason will see the consequences of their extremism at the ballot box this fall.”
Roger Severino, vice president of domestic policy at the Heritage Foundation, said in a statement, “The abortion industry is terrified that the Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade, ending America’s nightmare of abortion-on-demand under the false pretenses that this imagined ‘right’ is in the Constitution. They know this grave injustice is coming to an end, which is why they want to push even more extreme abortion laws that require taxpayers to pay for abortions and eradicate conscience rights for health care workers.”
Prior to the Senate vote, March for Life President Jeanne Mancini said, “The American people overwhelmingly oppose efforts to legalize abortion up until birth, with a majority believing that abortion should be limited — at most — to the first three months of pregnancy. Falsely labeled bills like the ‘Women’s Health Protection Act’ do a disservice to American women and children, who deserve real protections for their health and consciences.”
“This bill is the most egregious, the most horrific attack on the lives of unborn children and the health of moms in American history.” @RogerMarshallMD This is a must watch. https://t.co/yT9xh6aNXX pic.twitter.com/1YR11RqNf6
