First Lady Jill Biden Presents ‘International Women of Courage Award’ to Biological Male
First Lady Jill Biden presented a “women of courage” award to a biological male on Wednesday, during a White House ceremony celebrating International Women’s Day.
Alba Rueda, a biological male who identifies as a woman, was among the recipients of the “International Women of Courage” award, at the annual event hosted by the First Lady and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Rueda, who serves as Argentina’s Special Envoy for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, was one of 11 “extraordinary women” honored with the award.
“This audience is a testament to our national commitment to gender equality around the globe and the powerful influence of the people we honor today: Women of Courage,” Biden said in remarks at the event.
“And we have our Gender Policy Council—the first of its kind—and other leaders from across our Administration,” the First Lady added.
Rueda is Argentina’s current Special Envoy for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship. In that role, she was “the driving force behind Argentina’s executive order on the transgender labor quota in the public sector which was converted into the Transgender Labor Quota Act,” a State Department press release says.
The law requires that at least one percent of Argentina’s public sector jobs be staffed by people who identify as transgender.
According to the State Department release, Rueda also “actively campaigned” to change the name of the “National Women’s Conference” to:
“Plurinational Conference of Women and Lesbian, Cross-Dresser, Transgender, Bisexual, Intersex and Non-Binary Persons.”
In a 2021 speech on “Women Leaders as Advocates for Equality and Inclusion of LGBTI Persons,” Rueda suggested that “all pregnant persons,” including “trans men,” have the right to “voluntary interruption of pregnancy” (abortion).
Touting an Argentinian law permitting abortion through the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, Rueda referred to the “voluntary interruption of pregnancy of all pregnant persons, recognizing the rights and autonomy of women, lesbians, trans men and non-binary persons.”
