Gallup: Americans Say Government is the Most Important Problem
(CNSNews.com) — In a new survey conducted in January, Americans said the government/poor leadership is “the most important problem facing this country today.” The second most important problem cited is inflation.
In the survey of 1,011 adults, aged 18 and older, Gallup asked, “What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?”
In response, 21% said “the government/poor leadership.” That number is up from 15% in Nov.-Dec. 2022.
Coming in second place behind government was inflation, with 15% saying it was the most important problem.
Immigration was in third place, cited by 11% of adults; economy in general, 10%; and race relations/racism, 5%.
On the political scale, 24% of Republicans said government was the number one problem, as did 18% of Democrats.
Economic confidence is not good. According to the survey firm, its “Economic Confidence Index [ECI] summarizes Americans’ ratings of current economic conditions and whether the economy is getting better or worse. It has a theoretical range of -100 to +100.”
In this latest survey, economic confidence is at -39%.
“The latest -39 reading is identical to last month but well above the -58 score last June amid high gas prices and the record low of -72 in October 2008, during the Great Recession,” reported Gallup. “The ECI has been in negative territory since July 2021, when the U.S. inflation rate was on the rise.”
On the upside, however, 64% of U.S. adults think that now is good time to “find a quality job.”
“Americans’ mentions of the government as the nation’s most important problem have risen significantly in the past month, while inflation remains the next most-cited issue,” said Gallup. “Fewer name the economy in general, yet when asked about the economy directly, Americans continue to lack confidence in its current and future health.”
