Gallup: 'Current State of Moral Values Are The Worst They Have Ever Been'

(CNS News) — A new Gallup survey shows that Americans’ view of the state of moral values in the U.S. is “dismal,” the “worst they have ever been.” In addition, strong majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans believe the situation is going to get worse. 

From its May 2-22 Values and Beliefs poll of 1,007 adults living in all 50 states and D.C., Gallup found “a record-high 50% of Americans rate the overall state of moral values in the U.S. as ‘poor,’ and another 37% say it is ‘only fair.’ Just 1% think the state of moral values is ‘excellent’ and 12% ‘good.'”

“[T]he current poor rating is the highest on record by one percentage point,” said the survey firm. 

Gallup had asked, “How would you rate the overall state of moral values in this country today — as excellent, good, only fair or poor?” Fifty percent of Americans said “poor.”

On a political level, with the same question, 72% of Republicans said “poor,” and 44% of independents and 36% of Democrats said the same. 

Gallup then asked, “Right now, do you think the state of moral values in the country as a whole is getting better or getting worse?”

In response, 78% of Americans said “getting worse.”

“While Republicans are more negative than Democrats about the current state of moral values in the U.S., majorities of both partisan groups think it is deteriorating,” reported Gallup.  “The 93% of Republicans who think moral values are getting worse is the highest measured for the group by one point and comes after a sharp uptick in 2021 when Joe Biden became president.”

“However, Democrats have become significantly more pessimistic since Biden’s first year in office, when 49% thought values were getting worse,” said the polling firm.  “Independents’ expectations are similar to Democrats’ — 74% say they are getting worse.”

When asked to name the “most important problem with the state of moral values in the country today,” 18% of Americans said “consideration of others.” Eight percent said “racism/discrimination”; 7% said “lack of faith or religion”; 5% said “lack of family structure”; and 4% said abortion.

In conclusion, Gallup said, “Americans’ views of the state of moral values in the U.S. are dismal, and their expectations for the future are grim. This has generally been the case over the course of the 20-year trend, but negative ratings of the current state of moral values are the worst they have ever been. A lack of consideration for others is cited as the top problem, but racism has crept up as an issue.”
