HHS Website Links to ‘AbortionFinder’ to Help Women Terminate Their Unborn Babies
(CNS News) — On June 28, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra announced the launch of a new website that calls safe and legal access to birth control and abortion “an essential part of your health and well-being.” The website also points users to a third-party site that aims to provide people “easy access to the reproductive health care they need and want, and that includes abortion.”
However, the third-party site also includes resources for girls under 15 who want to obtain an abortion without a parent’s consent, and abortion finding for women at 40 weeks of pregnancy. The HHS website refers users to this site twice, but maintains that a hyperlink does not equal an endorsement or recommendation.
During Becerra’s June 28 press conference about the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, he called the decision “despicable,” but not “unpredictable,” and announced measures his department was taking to legally ensure abortion access, including the launching of the website Reproductive Rights.gov.
At the top of the new site’s homepage, it says, “Reproductive health care, including access to birth control and safe and legal abortion care, is an essential part of your health and well-being.”
The site consists of one main page with four main subheadings with drop-down information, including “Your Right to Birth Control,” “Your Right to Access Abortion Services,” “Your Right to Access Other Preventive Health Services,” and “If You Do Not Have Health Insurance Coverage.”
Twice, the HHS website points abortion-seeking patients to the website AbortionFinder.org: “If you need help paying for an abortion, abortion funds may be able to provide financial assistance. Information about abortion funds and resources to help are available at AbortionFinder.org,” and “If you need information on your state’s laws or legal help, you may consider this website: AbortionFinder.org”
The website states that “the inclusion of external hyperlinks does not constitute endorsement or recommendation by the U.S. Government or HHS of the linked web resources or the information, products, or services contained therein.”
AbortionFinder.org includes options for women “15 or younger,” informing them of where they can get an abortion and giving advice on how to receive a Judicial Bypass to circumvent laws requiring those under 18 to have the involvement of a parent or guardian when getting an abortion.
AbortionFinder.org aids users, even those 37-40 weeks pregnant or when a pregnancy is considered full-term, to find abortion services. For instance, it states, “Pregnancy can be ended safely at any ‘point[sic]” and “If you have trouble finding a provider that offers abortion at your pregnancy stage, call the National Abortion Federation (NAF) Hotline: 1-800-772-9100.”
If pregnancy is over 16 weeks, the AbortionFinder site provides information about the surgical abortion procedure of dilation and evacuation: “After your cervix is properly dilated, the abortion provider will use suction and some tools to gently empty your uterus.”
Dr. Kathi Aultman, a board-certified OB-GYN who has performed over 500 abortions, spoke to LiveAction and described the dilation and evacuation procedure in three parts. First, the abortionist uses suction tubing to remove amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus, but “the fetus is too large to fit through the cannula so he or she must be removed in pieces with a clamp.”
Second, the abortionist uses the clamp to remove the baby: “The abortionist reaches into the uterus with the clamp and tries to grasp an arm or leg. Once the abortionist has a firm grip, she pulls forcefully in order to remove the limb piece by piece. The abortionist removes the arms and legs followed by the head or the body including the torso and pelvis along with the intestines the heart and the lungs.”
Lastly, the abortionist “reassembles the fetal parts to make sure that there is nothing left inside the uterus which could cause infection or bleeding.”
