Pelosi Recalls Obamacare: ‘Thank God for the Nuns, the Catholic Nuns, Who Supported the Legislation’
(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) thanked God at her press briefing today for the Catholic nuns who supported the cause of getting the Affordable Care Act—AKA Obamacare—through Congress.
“Thank God for the nuns. Thank God for the nuns, the Catholic nuns, who supported the legislation,” said Pelosi.
Pelosi had initially noted that the current Congress is “one of the first” that has a “pro-choice” majority working with a Democratic president.
“And by the way, this is one of the first Congresses that we have had with a Democratic president with a pro-choice Congress,” she said.
She then recalled how some pro-life Democratic members of Congress made it difficult to enact the Affordable Care Act back in 2010.
“When President Obama was president, the House Democratic Caucus, we didn’t have 218 pro-choice votes,” Pelosi said.
“That’s why the Affordable Care Act was the fight that it was at the end because there were those on the outside who were saying: Oh, it’s about Roe v. Wade and terminating a pregnancy, which it completely was not,” she said.
“But our members, even those who were not pro-choice, understood that that was not what the healthcare bill was about. But there was an attempt on the outside to paint it that way,” she said.
“Thank God for the nuns. Thank God for the nuns, the Catholic nuns, who supported the legislation, helped us push it when that gate, to pass that legislation,” she said.
Here is a transcript of the part of Pelosi’s press briefing when she thanks God for the nuns who helped pass the Affordable Care Act:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi: “And by the way, this is one of the first Congresses that we have had with a Democratic president with a pro-choice Congress. When President Obama was president, the House Democratic Caucus, we didn’t have 218 pro-choice votes. That’s why the Affordable Care Act was the fight that it was at the end because there were those on the outside who were saying: Oh, it’s about Roe v. But there was an attempt on the outside to paint it that way. Thank God for the nuns. Thank God for the nuns, the Catholic nuns, who supported the legislation, helped us push it when that gate, to pass that legislation. Thank you all.”
