Pelosi: ‘We Pray That the Bipartisan Conversations Unfolding in the Senate Right Now Will…Save Lives’

(CNSNews.com) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) sent a “Dear Colleague” letter to Democratic members of Congress in which she called for enactment of gun-control legislation and said she prayed that bipartisan discussions in the Senate will lead to “legislation that can save lives.”

“On multiple occasions, the Democratic House has passed strong, commonsense gun violence prevention legislation,” Pelosi wrote to her colleagues. “In the past, similar measures that became law have been proven to reduce the sale of dangerous weapons and save lives.  We can and must do so again.

“We pray that the bipartisan conversations unfolding in the Senate right now will reach agreement on legislation that can save lives and can be acted upon soon,” she said. “As we have promised again and again to the courageous survivors of gun violence, we will never stop until the job is done.”

Here is the full text of Pelosi’s “Dear Colleague” letter:

“Dear Democratic Colleague,

“This morning, a day of unspeakable grief dawned on families in South Texas who awakened without the life and laughter of their precious children.  Even before families could bury their loved ones in Buffalo, another community has been torn apart by the horrors of gun violence.  The hearts of Americans are shattered, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families grieving an unimaginable loss.

“However, our sentiments and our moments of silence are not enough.  We must take action.  To Members of Congress, I say: your political survival is insignificant compared to the survival of America’s children.

“Since the world was made aware of this tragedy, Members have intensified their ongoing calls for possible legislation and for how soon we can take action.  The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force is meeting today, the Judiciary Committee is actively exploring a number of proposals, and the Rules Committee is preparing to review additional legislation.  As Leader Hoyer has announced, when the House returns the week of June 6th, the House will pass Congresswoman Lucy McBath’s bill to establish extreme risk protection orders nationwide, which will help keep guns out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others.

“On multiple occasions, the Democratic House has passed strong, commonsense gun violence prevention legislation.  In the past, similar measures that became law have been proven to reduce the sale of dangerous weapons and save lives.  We can and must do so again.

“We pray that the bipartisan conversations unfolding in the Senate right now will reach agreement on legislation that can save lives and can be acted upon soon.  As we have promised again and again to the courageous survivors of gun violence, we will never stop until the job is done.

“As we go down this path, we do so with the confidence that the American people support action to combat gun violence – overwhelmingly and on a bipartisan basis.  This view was passionately voiced by Golden State Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr last night.

“Thank you for your relentless leadership For The Children.

“Sincerely,

“NANCY”
