People Employed by Government Up 46,000 in February

(CNSNews.com) – The number of people employed by government in the United States increased by 46,000 in February, according to the employment report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In January, according to BLS’ seasonally adjusted numbers, there were 22,449,000 people employed by government in this country. In February, that increased to 22,495,000.

The all-time high in government employment in the United States occurred in May of 2010, a Census year. That month government employed 22,996,000 people. From April to May of that year, federal government employment spiked by 432,000, climbing from 2,984,000 to 3,416,000. Similarly, from June to August of 2020, another Census year—and, also, the year the COVID pandemic began—federal employment spiked by 274,000. During that three-month period, it climbed from 2,884,000 to 3,158,000.

From January to February of this year, federal government employment increased by 7,000, rising from 2,881,000 to 2,888,000.

State government employment increased by 2,000 from January to February, rising from 5,162,000 to 5,164,000. State-government employment in the United States hit its all-time high in February 2020, just as the COVID pandemic was starting. That month, it was 5,317,000. By October 2020, it had dropped by 244,000 to 5,073,000. Since October 2020, state government employment is up 91,000.

Local government employment increased by 37,000 in February, rising from 14,406,000 in January to 14,443,000. Local government employment hit its all-time high in February and March of 2020, when it was 14,699,000. It then dropped by a precipitous 769,000 in April 2020, when it hit 13,930,000.

Since April 2020, it has climbed by 513,000 to the current level of 14,443,000. But that is still 256,000 below the record level of 14,699,000 that it hit in February and March of 2020.
