Rep. McCarthy: 'What They're Doing in This Committee Is Going After Their Political Foes'

( – The select House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021 has no “legislative” purpose, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo.

The committee has subpoenaed McCarthy, but he says the committee never responded to his 11-page letter, in which he “asked for information” about his command appearance.

“My opinion of the committee has not changed, because remember what this committee is. Remember what the purpose is,” McCarthy said:

“First, Nancy Pelosi has broken a 232-year history of the House by not allowing the minority to appoint anyone to the committee. This committee does not have 13 members, as the power of the House voted for it to have. But what’s even worse about this committee is, it’s beyond its legislative scope.

“There are separations of powers. The House does not have criminal investigation. But what they’re doing in this committee is going after their political foes, their opponents. We have watched it time and again.

“Their role should be, why is — why was the Capitol so ill-prepared that day? What do we have to do in the future to make sure it’s not? The Senate had a bipartisan committee look at it. And that’s exactly what they looked at, the legislative role of the House.

“But what we have found with one-party rule of Democrats, taking over the House, the Senate and the presidency, they use the power to go after their political opponents, instead of bringing down gasoline prices. Today, it has now doubled since — the gasoline price — since President Biden has taken office.

“Are they going to have any hearings on that? Are they going to secure our border? Are they going to stop fentanyl from coming across? Are they going to let our parents have a say in their kids’ education?

“This is the role that Congress should be having, but not under Nancy Pelosi and one-party rule of Democrats.”

Both McCarthy and host Maria Bartiromo criticized the arrest of Peter Navarro on Friday for ignoring a committee subpoena. The former Trump adviser was about to board a plane in Nashville.

“They intercepted me getting on the plane and then they put me in handcuffs, they bring me here,” Navarro told reporters. “They put me in leg irons. They stick me in a cell.”

Bartiromo said she spoke to Navarro on Saturday. “He said he was mishandled,” she said. “They would not allow him to make a phone call. He wanted to call a lawyer. They wouldn’t allow it. But they gave him a public defender three minutes before he was to see a judge.”

“They didn’t ask him to come in and surrender,” McCarthy noted:

“What the report is, they actually followed him in the car to the airport to make a scene and to handcuff him. Why would they do that? Why would they go about making that happen? He’s a political opponent, not a criminal on the basis of what they look at,” McCarthy said.

“The Supreme Court has ruled there are separations of powers. Our role in the House is legislatively. And if there was a legislative role — and that’s why I sent a letter to the committee itself, questioning what’s happening there, especially with what the members of the committee (have) been saying.

“Remember, you have Adam Schiff that put an e-mail fund-raising out on the idea of subpoenaing me before I even received the subpoena. So is this really a legitimate committee, or is this a political committee going after their opponents and trying to raise money?

“Why would they have it on prime time? Why wouldn’t they be holding hearings about bringing down inflation, bringing down the cost of gasoline, securing our border? These are the real challenges of what America is facing each and every day.”

McCarthy said the committee should be examining why the Capitol was not secure on January 6.

“In the Senate research what they found was the riot gear was locked in a bus far down from the Capitol, so the police officers didn’t have them, the security they needed. The police officers didn’t have the training that they needed.

“This is the role that the House should be doing, to protect the House for the future,” McCarthy said.

“But the wrong problem here is, you have Nancy Pelosi putting political people on here that you have just talked about earlier that created a whole hoax before to go after President Trump only for their own political purposes. And that’s what they continue to play.”
