Sen. Bernie Sanders on Using Marijuana: ‘It Didn’t Do Much for Me’
(CNSNews.com) – Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont sent out a tweet on Friday that featured a video clip of a speech he gave on Thursday in which he praised President Joe Biden for pardoning people with federal marijuana-possession convictions and then said he had twice tried marijuana himself many years ago and but that it had not done much for him.
“You know, people like marijuana. You don’t like marijuana,” Sanders said. “I tried it twice about a hundred years ago. It didn’t do much for me.
“Other people, I gather, have had different experiences,” he said.
“But, whatever it is, nobody in their right mind thinks that marijuana is the equivalent of fentanyl or heroin, which are killer drugs,” said Sanders.
In the text of his tweet, Sanders said: “I applaud the president for yesterday’s executive action on marijuana. But we’ve got a long way to go. I happened to believe that marijuana should be legal all over the country.”
In the video clip of his speech, Sanders said: “The idea of having marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug along with heroin and fentanyl is totally insane.
Here is the full transcript of the video clip that Sanders tweeted:
“Today, President Biden said something very important. Number one, he said that at the federal level people who have been arrested for marijuana will be pardoned.
“And he said something else that many of us have been working on for years. You have this insane system in Washington in which they determine, you know, what drugs are most lethal, are most dangerous.
“And God knows that fentanyl and heroin are killer drugs. We all know that. The idea of having marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug along with heroin and fentanyl is totally insane.
“You know, people like marijuana. You don’t like marijuana. I tried it twice about a hundred years ago. It didn’t do much for me. Other people, I gather, have had different experiences. But, whatever it is, nobody in their right mind thinks that marijuana is the equivalent of fentanyl or heroin, which are killer drugs.
“And what the president announced today is he’s moving forward to take marijuana off of Schedule 1.
“I mention that not only because it’s important unto itself, but because it shows what happens when you work hard at the grassroots level.
“It’s something that many of us have worked on for many years and it finally has made its way to the top, and I applaud the president for making that decision. But we’ve got a long, long way to go.
“In my view, as I said, I happen to believe that marijuana should be legal all over this country. All right. We’ve got to continue that effort.”
