Sen. Ernst: Pelosi ‘Did the Absolute Right Thing’ in Visiting Taiwan
(CNS News) – When asked about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) trip to Taiwan this week, Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) would not say whether Pelosi should have gone or not, and Senator Joni Ernst (R- Iowa) said this was a rare moment when she agreed with the speaker’s decision.
At the US Capitol on Tuesday, CNS News asked Sen. Hirono, “Should Speaker Pelosi have gone to Taiwan?”
“It’s a decision she made and I’m not going to say she should or shouldn’t do it,” said Hirono. “She’s the speaker of the House and I respect her.”
Ernst was asked the same question and she said, “I rarely agree with Speaker Pelosi. I agree with the decision, I think she did the absolute right thing. We should never allow China to tell our members where we can go.”
CNS News then asked Ernst, “If the PRC does attack her, should the U.S. respond?”
“That’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen,” said Ernst, laughing. “China would never do that because they know the wrath of America.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) along with five other House Democrats visited Taiwan on Monday, August 2nd. Pelosi is the most prominent politician to visit the controversial country since Newt Gingrich’s (R-Ga.) trip while he was speaker of the House in 1997.
On Aug 4. China began its promised retaliation campaign by deploying planes and firing missiles near Taiwan.
Pelosi was reportedly welcomed to the country with electronic billboards with heart emojis. The speaker was also bestowed with a government honor called the Order of the Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon. After meeting with Taiwan officials, including President Tsai Ing-wen, Pelosi left Taiwan on Wednesday, August 3rd.
Biden officials failed to say decisively if they supported Pelosi’s trip, with Biden saying last month, “The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now.” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the trip and China’s retaliation have not deterred the White House from defending its interests in the Western Pacific.
