Sen. Kennedy: 'America's Institutions Should Not Be…Perceived to Be Political'

(CNSNews.com) – If Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg does indict former President Donald Trump in connection with the 2016 Stormy Daniels case, it will have implications that go beyond the former president.

“America’s institutions should not be — or be perceived to be — political,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) told “Fox & Friends” on Monday morning.

“Look at the damage that former FBI Director Comey did to the FBI,” Kennedy said:

“In this particular case, it’s hard to know where the justice begins and the politics ends. The Manhattan district attorney, Mr. Bragg, we are not exactly talking about Oliver Wendell Scalia here. He’s not a neutral arbiter. He’s more of an activist then an impartial prosecutor. He believes cops are bigger problem than criminals; he refuses to prosecute many crimes.

“He’s the one who tried to prosecute Mr. Jose Alba, the bodega proprietor, when he…had to stab a robber to save his own life. And I would — I don’t know what Mr. Bragg has as evidence. Maybe he has the complete goods.

“But he can do a lot of damage here to a very important institution if he’s not careful. And I would say the same thing if President Trump were a Democrat, or if this issue were on the other foot.”

Kennedy said prosecutors should not be politicians: “I don’t want to have to worry, if I am accused of a crime, whether the prosecutor’s a Republican or Democrat or crypto socialist like Mr. Bragg. That is not the way our system is supposed to work.”

Donald Trump wrote the following message in all-caps on his Truth Social platform on Saturday morning:

TRENDING:

“NOW ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE, WHICH HAS ALLOWED NEW RECORDS TO BE SET IN VIOLENT CRIME & WHOSE LEADER IS FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS, INDICATE THAT, WITH NO CRIME BEING ABLE TO BE PROVEN, & BASED ON AN OLD & FULLY DEBUNKED (BY NUMEROUS OTHER PROSECUTORS!) FAIRYTALE, THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”

Some Democrats pounced on Trump’s call for protest, recalling what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In fact, CNN on Monday showed video of security cameras going up outside Bragg’s office in New York City.

But Sen. Kennedy had a different view: “In America, you are free to protest,” he said. “You are not really free if you can’t express yourself. But do it peacefully. Don’t be a knucklehead and riot. Do it peacefully.”
