Sen. Kennedy: ‘China is Committing Atrocities…That the Rest of the World Should Not Ignore'
(CNSNews.com) — When asked whether he had any doubt that the Chinese are committing genocide against the Uyghurs and other ethnic minority groups, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said he did not “want to get into” the “proper definition of genocide,” but added that “China is committing atrocities” and “their leaders have black hearts.”
On Feb. 16 at the U.S. Capitol, CNS News asked Sen. Kennedy, “The State Department says China is committing ‘genocide and crimes against humanity’ against the Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in Xinjiang. Do you have any doubt China is committing genocide?”
Sen. Kennedy responded, “Well, China is committing atrocities. Now, it depends on how you define genocide. I know early on our Secretary of State, I believe it was Antony Blinken, accused the Chinese of genocide. I don’t want to get into the appropriate or proper definition of genocide.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated multiple times that Communist China is committing genocide.
Kennedy continued, “I will say that when a country kills its people, makes them abort their babies, castrates its male citizens, puts them in labor camps, refuses to allow them to practice their religion; those are atrocities that the rest of the world should not ignore.”
CNS News then asked Sen. Kennedy, “What do you believe Congress should do about it?”
“I’m all for refusing to buy materials, or goods, or use services that are developed or put together by slave labor, by the Uyghurs,” he said. “I don’t know what else we can frankly do. We’ve asked China repeatedly to stop. China is not going to stop. The people of China are wonderful people, I have been there several times, but their leaders have black hearts.”
The 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: China published by the State Department says, “Genocide and crimes against humanity occurred during the year against predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and members of other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang [China]. These crimes were continuing and included: the arbitrary imprisonment or other severe deprivation of physical liberty of more than one million civilians; forced sterilization, coerced abortions, and more restrictive application of the country’s birth control policies; rape; torture of a large number of those arbitrarily detained; forced labor; and draconian restrictions on freedom of religion or belief, freedom of expression, and freedom of movement.”
The report further states that “significant human rights issues included credible reports of: arbitrary or unlawful killings by the government.”
