Sen. Lummis: U.S. Will Need to ‘Defend the Hell Out of Nancy Pelosi’ if China Takes Action

(CNS News) – Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) expressed her full support for Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) trip to Taiwan this week, and said the U.S. will need to “defend the hell out of Nancy Pelosi,” if Communist China attacks Taiwan during her visit.

At the Capitol on August 2, CNS News asked Senator Lummins, “Should Speaker Pelosi go to Taiwan?”

“Yes,” the senator replied.

CNS News then asked, “If the PRC [People’s Republic of China] attacks her, how should the U.S. respond?”

“Defend the hell out of Nancy Pelosi,” said Lummis.  “Thank you.”

Speaker Pelosi landed in Taiwan Tuesday evening local time after weeks of speculation surrounding her trip to Asia.

According to China’s foreign ministry, Chinese President Xi Jinping told President Joe Biden on the phone on July 28 that “those who play with fire will perish by it.”

Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Tan Kefei said in a statement this week that if the U.S. moves forward with Pelosi’s trip, the Chinese military “will take strong measures to thwart any external interference and separatist plans for ‘Taiwan Independence’ and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Representative Pelosi explained her reasoning for her visit to Taiwan in a commentary published Aug. 2 in the Washington Post,  “Why I’m leading a congressional delegation to Taiwan.”

As Speaker of the House, Pelosi is third in line to the Office of the President. The last time a U.S. politician as high-ranking as Speaker Pelosi visited Taiwan was in 1997 when then-Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) visited the island, which China claims as part of its territory.
