Sen. Schumer: Rupert Murdoch Must 'Stop Tucker Carlson From Going on Tonight,' 'Our Democracy Depends on It'

( — Outraged by Tucker Carlson’s report last night that provided a fuller picture of the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol — a report that strongly suggests certain lawmakers lied about the events — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called on Fox Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch to “stop” Carlson “from going on tonight.”

Carlson is the host of Tucker Carlson Tonight, which starts at 8:00 p.m. EST. On his March 6 broadcast, Carlson presented some video footage from Jan. 6, 2021 that had not been shown to the public. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) provided Carlson access to some 40,000 hours of previously hidden footage.

Carlson’s report shows many of the demonstrators at the Capitol who did not engage in any violence, were let into the Capitol by police, and even escorted around the different rooms in the building by the police. This footage was not released by the Democrat-dominant Jan. 6 Committee.

According to Carlson, “The January 6 Committee had access to this very same tape and watched much of it. But as we’re about to show you, Committee members lied about what they saw and then hid the evidence from the public, as well as from January 6 criminal defendants and their lawyers. that is unforgivable.”

He continued, “Virtually no one in Washington, Republican or Democrat, certainly not in the news media, wanted to see this tape released tonight. That’s why it’s remained hidden for more than two years.”

“Taken as a whole, the video record does not support the claim that January 6 was an insurrection,” said Carlson.  “In fact, it demolishes that claim. And that’s exactly why the Democratic Party and its allies in the media prevented you from seeing it.”

By controlling the images you were allowed to view from January 6th, they controlled how the public understood that day,” he added. “They could lie about what happened and you would never know the difference. Those lies had a purpose. They created a pretext for a federal crackdown on opponents of the uniparty in Washington.”

Carlson’s report — a second installment is scheduled for this evening — sparked a lot of anger among some members of Congress and especially among members of the liberal media, such as CNN, NBC, and MSNBC.

In response, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) went to the Senate floor and said, “Last night, millions of Americans tuned into one of the most shameful hours we have ever seen on cable television. with contempt for the facts, disregard of the risks, and knowing full well that he was lying, lying to his audience, Fox News host Tucker Carlson ran a lengthy segment last night arguing the Jan. 6 Capitol attack was not a violent insurrection.”

“Mister Carlson told the bold-faced lie that the Capitol attack, which we all saw with oue own eyes, was somehow not an attack at all,” said Schumer. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anchor treat the American people and American democracy with such disdain.”

“He’s going to come back tonight with another segment,” Schumer added. “Fox News should tell him not to. Fox News, Rupert Murdoch, tell Carlson not to run a second segment of lies. You know it’s a lie….”

Also, at a press conference on Tuesday, Schumer said, “These lies continue tonight. Rupert Murdoch, who’s admitted there were lies and said he regretted it, has a special obligation to stop Tucker Carlson from going on tonight — now that he’s seen how he’s perverted and slimed the truth — and from letting him go on again and again and again.”

“Not because their views deserve such opprobrium,” said Schumer, “but because our democracy depends on it.”

Tucker Carlson Tonight regularly draws an audience of 3-plus million viewers. It is the No. 2 highest rated cable news program in the U.S., behind Fox’s The Five. Among viewers age 25-54, the group most prized by advertisers, Carlson’s show is No. 1, usually pulling in more than 400,000 viewers in that demographic.
