TPUSA Lawyer Sends ‘Cease and Desist’ Letter Demanding MSNBC Retract ‘White Supremacist Cult’ Slur, Apologize
Turning Point USA is threatening legal action against MSNBC, if the liberal news organization does not immediately retract, and apologize for, a piece by one of its columnists calling TPUSA “a MAGA white supremacist cult.”
In a letter dated January 10, from TPUSA In-House Counsel Veronica Peterson to NBCU’s legal team, TPUSA denounces a January 7, 2023 MSNBC commentary, in which author Julio Ricardo Varela makes the derogatory claim while tying Mexican-American Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) to TPUSA:
“A Latina version of Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., Luna, according to a summary of her career in the Tampa Bay Times, followed the MAGA playbook to gain political fame. She has ties to chief Kevin McCarthy opponent, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and has worked with what I consider to be a MAGA white supremacist cult: Turning Point USA.”

On Friday, TPUSA Founder and President Charlie Kirk posted the Cease and Desist letter on his Twitter page, along with the following comment:
“MSNBC attacked Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and slandered Turning Point USA as a ‘MAGA white supremacist cult’
“TPUSA’s legal team has issued a Cease and Desist demanding that MSNBC immediately issue a retraction & apology for platforming these reckless and defamatory statements.”
The letter explains that the MSNBC’s slur has no basis in fact and cites a fact-checking group’s analysis as evidence that the columnist’s slur is unfounded:
“The article falsely states that TPUSA is ‘a MAGA white supremacist cult.’ The article has no surrounding context for this baseless assertion.
“Setting aside the outrageous use of the word ‘cult,’ your allegation that TPUSA is a white supremacist organization is patently false. TPUSA is a 501(c)(3) organization organized and operated to start conversations among young people by educating students about fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government.
“Even Politifact confirmed that claims about TPUSA and white supremacy have zero factual basis.”
“TPUSA demands that you immediately cease and desist further unlawful defaming our organization and retract the defamatory statement. TPUSA demands that such retraction be issued no later than January 12, 2023,” the letter says.
